The role of academia
What should academia offer when so much information can be accessed from home? For many learners, finding an explanation is no longer the main difficulty. The more demanding task is developing the judgment, confidence and ability to use that knowledge in situations that do not come with clear instructions.
I see an important shift in the educational role of academic institutions: from primarily providing information to designing and facilitating distinctive learning experiences. Research, disciplinary knowledge and rigorous teaching remain essential. Their value grows when students can question, apply and test what they learn with others.
“Information is abundant. An outstanding learning experience is still scarce.”
The reason to come together should be an experience that is difficult to reproduce at home alone. Meeting interesting people with different backgrounds, working in teams and defending an argument against thoughtful criticism can expose assumptions that independent study leaves unchallenged. The institution’s role is to make these encounters purposeful.
Experiential learning connects action with reflection. Combined with an AI-native platform such as my management simulation, it can deepen learning by helping participants test ideas, apply new insights, experience consequences and develop practical judgment.
A real-world atmosphere brings competing priorities, incomplete information and responsibility for decisions into the learning process. In a management simulation, for example, knowing a concept is only the beginning. Participants must negotiate with teammates, choose a course of action, respond to consequences and explain their reasoning.
Activity alone does not guarantee learning. Clear objectives, expert guidance, feedback and structured reflection turn an engaging exercise into an educational experience. The outcome should be visible in what participants can do afterwards: assess evidence, cooperate across differences and make better-informed decisions.
This is the direction I seek to develop through applied programs and simulation-based education. Academia can bring together people, expertise and challenges in ways that individual study rarely can. Designing those conditions well is central to its continuing value.
